New Video Explains Owner Builder Authorization System

The HPO has developed a short educational video on the Owner Builder Authorization (OBA) system.
The video, which is playing at the Building Smart #16 seminars and is available online, explains how the HPO administers and monitors Owner Builder Authorizations in order to ensure appropriate competition in the marketplace while protecting the interests of home buyers.
The video also outlines the HPO’s increased enforcement capabilities to ensure compliance with the Homeowner Protection Act.
“We’ve received a lot of feedback from home builders who want to know how we administer Owner Builder Authorizations in order to protect consumers and ensure a level playing field for Licensed Residential Builders,” said HPO Vice President and Registrar Wendy Acheson.
“This four-minute video is intended to answer those questions. Builders who’ve seen the video have shown great interest in the topic and see it as good information to help reduce abuse of the owner builder exemption and increase awareness of the requirements under the Act.”
The HPO is also working with the provincial Real Estate Council and Real Estate Associations to educate realtors about the requirements of the Homeowner Protection Act.
The new video can be found in the What's New section at www.hpo.bc.ca and BC Housing’s YouTube channel.
