Professional Builders’ Institute Established
Over the past few years, the HPO has been working collaboratively with industry and consumer representatives to raise the bar of professionalism in residential construction. From this collaborative process came industry task group recommendations on minimum qualifications for licensed residential builders of one to four unit residential buildings, including the creation of an independent industry body to work with government on implementation measures.
In anticipation of further steps being taken to establish a system of minimum education and training requirements, the Professional Builders’ Institute (PBI) was launched in October 2010. The PBI, formed by industry as an independent society, will work with the HPO on developing systems to administer minimum qualifications, including the accreditation of education and training providers.
The HPO, as a branch of BC Housing, continues to perform its responsibilities established under the Homeowner Protection Act including licensing more than 5,000 residential builders in the province, and research and education benefiting the industry and consumers.
