Building Smart #13: Insulating – The Cold, Hard Facts

Proposed changes to the BC Building Code in Fall 2011 may impact the way homes are designed, built and inspected.

To achieve the proposed new energy performance requirements, different designs, material choices, and construction methods need to be employed.

Building Smart #13 focuses on buildable solutions with market-available materials. The seminar explores the specifics of how to design and construct roofs, walls and basements that meet or exceed more stringent energy performance requirements.

“Many questions are being raised about how industry standards are going to change in light of upcoming Energy Provisions of the BC Building Code,” said Murray Frank, who delivers the Building Smart seminars province-wide on behalf of the HPO. “These changes will potentially impact the way homes are framed, detailed at openings and penetrations, how airtightness will be achieved, and the materials chosen for insulating and vapour diffusion control.”

This three-hour seminar explains solutions in clear, easy to understand language using video examples, computer modeling, field recorded results and animated graphics.

Attendees will learn about:

  • different combinations of insulating materials
  • the role that insulating materials play in airtightness, vapour diffusion control, moisture control, and energy rating
  • building details that facilitate the proposed performance changes, and
  • the relative impact on construction costs.

Building Smart #13: Insulating – The Cold, Hard Facts was developed by the HPO in collaboration with the Building and Safety Standards Branch, insulation sub-contractors throughout British Columbia, Canadian insulating trade associations and major manufacturers of insulating materials.

The HPO has a proud tradition when it comes to Building Smart, having delivered 240 seminars in more than 20 communities across B.C. since the program started in 2004. Sign up today and join 14,000 other participants who have benefitted from these practical, educational seminars in the past.

Every participant receives a presentation guide and a certificate of completion. The registration cost of $39 (including HST) includes sandwiches and light refreshments before the presentation.
