Licensing and New Home Construction
In 2010, there were a total of 23,387 new homes enrolled with home warranty insurance, an increase of 59.9% over the previous year. In the same period, there were 8,703 single-detached homes (an increase of 18.0% compared to 2009) and 14,684 multi-unit homes (an increase of 102.6% over 2009) enrolled with home warranty insurance. The Homeowner Protection Act provides the HPO with the enforcement tools necessary to carry out its regulatory role in the residential construction industry and protect buyers of new homes. Administering the Act involves significant compliance efforts on the part of the HPO. This regulatory function encompasses reviewing and monitoring owner builder authorizations and ensuring that residential builders have current licences. Read more ...
During 2010, the information publicly available from the HPO’s searchable online licensed builder registry continued to be well utilized. The expanded registry shows the licence status of both licensed residential builders and builders whose licences have expired, closed, or been suspended or cancelled. Read more ...
