Year in Review – 2010 Highlights

January  Launch of Online Services for Licensed Residential Builders
 • Builders welcomed the HPO’s introduction of online services, recognizing that it makes good business sense to use an electronic document system that is fast, efficient and good to the environment.
March  First-Time Home Buyer Seminar
 • The HPO was proud to be the title sponsor of the First-Time Home Buyer Seminar presented by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association – the largest seminar of its kind in North America.
April 1  Transfer of Homeowner Protection Act Responsibilities
 • As part of government’s review of Crown corporations, the Province transferred a number of the key responsibilities under the Homeowner Protection Act to BC Housing, creating a more comprehensive infrastructure, synergies and operational efficiencies.
April 7 - May 20  Building Smart #12 – Changes to the BC Building Code and Emerging Green Technologies
 • Builders and other industry professionals learned first hand how British Columbia is setting the standard for environmental  and energy responsible home construction, and is ready to take the next steps with revisions to the BC Building Code.
June 27 - 30  HPO Sponsors Global Forum on Building Envelope Technologies
 • The International Conference on Building Envelope Systems and Technologies (ICBEST 2010) attracted more than 310 delegates from 23 countries. Researchers, engineers, architects, builders and others gathered in Vancouver to exchange information at this global forum. Minister Rich Coleman welcomed delegates on behalf of the Province, which contributed $10,000 in support of the conference through BC Housing. The HPO participated as a sponsor, presenter, exhibitor and member of the organizing committee.
August  New Builder Insight #7 Bulletin
• The HPO introduced a new technical bulletin on ASHRAE 90.1 – Requirements for the Building Enclosure. Understanding building enclosure requirements – and the compliance paths for multi-unit residential buildings to reduce the total energy consumption and improve comfort – is the focus of this newest addition to the Builder Insight bulletin series.
September  BC Building Envelope Council Conference
 • The BC Building Envelope Council (BCBEC) 2010 Conference held in Vancouver attracted more than 200 delegates. The Province, BC Housing and the HPO had a strong presence as a platinum sponsor and exhibitor, with a welcome message from Minister Rich Coleman, and a seminar presentation that focused on changes to the BC Building Code and emerging green technologies. The HPO was also actively involved on the conference planning team.
September 20 - November 17  Building Smart #13: Insulating – The Cold, Hard Facts
 • Presented in 21 communities across the province with 1,253 attendees, this seminar focused on proposed changes to the BC Building Code for fall 2011, and explored how to design and construct roofs, walls and basements that meet or exceed more stringent energy performance requirements.
• At the capacity-filled Vancouver seminar, the Minister of State for Building Code Renewal, Naomi Yamamoto, delivered a welcome message from the Province.
October 1  Minister Announces Professional Builders’ Institute (PBI)
• The PBI was established by the residential construction industry, in collaboration with the Province, in anticipation of further steps being taken to develop a system of minimum education and training requirements as a condition of obtaining and maintaining a residential builder licence. The Institute was formed to accredit education and training courses and programs.
October 18 - November 4  Survey Gauges Pulse of Homeowners and Homebuyers
 • More than 900 residents participated in the HPO’s 2010 Consumer Survey. Conducted by an independent research firm, the survey provides a reliable snapshot of awareness and satisfaction with the home warranty insurance and residential builder licensing systems, as well as consumer confidence.
December  GVHBA Trends 2011 Seminar: Rethinking Strategies
• The HPO was proud to sponsor this popular annual seminar hosted by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association which forecasted economic performance, speculated on housing activity, and discussed homebuyer demographics and real estate marketing trends.
