Becoming a Licensed Building Envelope Renovator
To become a Licensed Building Envelope Renovator:
- Contact a home warranty insurance provider and obtain acceptance for home warranty insurance. If you are accepted for home warranty insurance covering building envelope renovations, the warranty provider will notify the HPO.
- Complete the Residential Builder Licence Application and Agreement. Make sure you check “Building Envelope Renovator” in the Builder Type section.
- Send your licence application to the Homeowner Protection Office. Ensure your application includes:
- The completed Residential Builder Licence Application and Agreement, with original signatures
- A cheque for $600 made payable to the Homeowner Protection Office or a completed Visa authorization form. If you are currently licensed with the Homeowner Protection Office as a Licensed Residential Builder, the Building Envelope Renovator license fee is $100.
Complete applications will take approximately 3-5 business days for processing. The HPO maintains a public registry of all Licensed Residential Builders and Licensed Building Envelope Renovators on this website.

Renewing a Building Envelope Renovator Licence
Licensed Building Envelope Renovators must renew their licence if they intend to repair building envelopes in the next 12-month period after their licence expires.
Approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date, the Licensed Building Envelope Renovator will receive a renewal package from the HPO.
Included in the renewal package will be the Residential Builder Licence Application and Agreement form. To renew your building envelope renovator licence:
- Contact your home warranty insurance company to confirm your continued acceptance. If you are accepted for home warranty insurance covering building envelope renovations, the warranty provider will notify the HPO.
- Complete the Residential Builder Licence Application and Agreement. Make sure you check "Building Envelope Renovator" in the Builder Type section.

Send your licence application to the Homeowner Protection Office. Ensure your application includes:
- the completed residential Builder Licence Application and Agreement, with original signatures
- a cheque for $500 made payable to the Homeowner Protection Office or a completed Visa authorization form (Only one $500 renewal fee is required for those acting as both Licensed Residential Builders for new home construction and Licensed Building Envelope Renovators.), and
- payment of any outstanding monies owed to the HPO.
Complete applications will take approximately 3-5 business days for processing.
Suspension or Cancellation of a Building Envelope Renovator's Licence
The Homeowner Protection Act sets out conditions under which the Registrar may suspend or cancel a Residential Builder Licence:
- for any reason that would have disqualified the licence in the first place
- for filing false information in the application
- for refusing to provide authorized information as requested
- for a breach of a condition of licensing, and
- for a conviction of an offence under the Homeowner Protection Act
- if the licence was issued in error.
